Japan Engine Corporation (J-ENG) has announced to receive an order of MGO mono-fuel engine, "6UEC35LSJ", for a 17,500dwt greater coasting vessel, built by Onomichi Dockyard Co., Ltd. and owned by MOL Drybulk Ltd. The vessel will be in service in 2022.

The UEC-LSJ engine was developed with the support of The Nippon Foundation and the J-ENG's unique technology of stratified injection system is applied to realize environmentally friendliness by using MGO (or MDO) as fuel.
This breakthrough engine will contribute to ESG management of all the stakeholders such as shipping company, shipyard by providing the following advantages;

・Lower fuel consumption with approximately 5% less than that of the same class UE engine will contribute to meet the EEDI Phase 3 requirement, which is an index for CO2 emissions reduction.
・Mono-fuel and no fuel heating system can realize simplified fuel supply system, and fuel change-over is not needed.
・Thanks to stable fuel oil quality, stable operation and longer maintenance interval of combustion chamber components, will be attainable.
・SOx scrubber is not necessary.

The stratified injection system is a technology to inject two different fuels (in liquid) from a single injector in stratified layers. In case of MGO mono-fuel engine, MGO and water are injected to provide lower fuel consumption and lower NOx emissions. This stratified injection technology can be applicable to ammonia, bio-fuels, and other carbon-free alternative fuels, which has a further high potential to reduce GHG emissions.

J-ENG has already developed the LSJ engines with engine bores of 35/42/50 cm. Many inquiries for chemical tanker, bulk carrier, etc. from shipping companies and shipyards are received. This engine is promised to contribute to realize a carbon-free society as one of bridge solutions to attain the zero GHG emissions.
