Cumulative Production of UE Engines Reaches 5,000 Units　～Japan Engine Corporation (J-ENG) Enters the Next Stage of Growth～

Japan Engine Corporation (J-ENG) has reached a cumulative production milestone of 5,000 units UE engines, its low-speed two-stroke marine engine developed and marketed by the company.

The commemorative 5,000th engine is the main engine (model 6UEC50LSH-Eco-C3-EGR) to be installed on a Handymax bulk carrier (58,000 DWT semi-bulk carrier) being built by Oshima Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. for NYK Bulk & Projects Carriers Ltd. and Kitaura Kaiun Co., Ltd.

Since the completion of the first UE engine in 1955, UE engines have been highly regarded in domestic and overseas shipping and shipbuilding markets for their high performance, reliability, and environmental friendliness. UE engines marked its 70th anniversary in 2025. Over this long history, J-ENG has steadily increased UE engine production through a global niche strategy built on strengthening its portfolio to accurately address core market segments and deepening collaboration with licensees in Japan and abroad. Achieving a cumulative total of 5,000 units marks an important milestone that demonstrates how UE engines have long supported global maritime transport and earned strong trust from the shipping and shipbuilding industries worldwide.

In addition to conventional heavy fuel oil engines, J-ENG, as a GX First Mover, is developing and manufacturing next-generation fuel engines including ammonia-fueled, hydrogen-fueled, and methanol-fueled engines, that contribute to reducing greenhouse gases (GHG). Furthermore, having been selected for the ‘Project for Promoting the Construction of Zero-Emission Ships, etc.’ — a joint project in collaboration with the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism and the Ministry of the Environment, funded by GX Transition Bonds, J-ENG has commenced construction of a new factory for ammonia-fueled engines. Through bold growth investments, the company will further expand UE engine production capacity.

Furthermore, amid robust newbuilding demand in China, orders for UE engines by Chinese licensees are growing strongly, significantly contributing to increased production volumes and market share expansion. In step with the rapid growth of China’s shipbuilding market, Chinese licensees are also enhancing facilities to boost capacity, and further production growth is anticipated.
