J-ENG receives orders for main engine, “6UEC60LSJA-HPSCR” for four Ammonia-Fueled Pure Car and Truck Carriers ~Supplying fully Japan-made Ammonia-Fueled Engines to the “ALL JAPAN” Project~

Japan Engine Corporation (J-ENG) has received the orders for four units of the main engine, “6UEC60LSJA-HPSCR” a fully Japan-made ammonia-fueled engine, which will be supplied as the main engines for four ammonia-fueled Pure Car and Truck Carriers (PCTCs). The vessels are part of a project to build and operate ammonia-fueled PCTCs announced at a joint press conference on 27th October, 2026, by seven companies: Imabari Shipbuilding Co., Ltd., Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha, Ltd., Kyokuyo Shipyard Corporation, JERA Co., Inc., Shin Kurushima Dockyard Co., Ltd., Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK), and Nihon Shipyard Co., Ltd.

The project aims to decarbonize international shipping and accelerates to create an ammonia market by establishing an ammonia fuel supply chain based in the “Chubu region” of Japan and by building and operating PCTCs that utilize this supply network. J-ENG is participating as the main engine manufacturer in this “ALL JAPAN” project, which integrates everything from the procurement and supply of ammonia fuel to the construction and operation of vessels. J-ENG will support safe and reliable vessel operations through its integrated framework covering everything from the development, design, and manufacture of 6UEC60LSJA-HPSCR to after-sales service.

Ammonia emits no CO₂ when combusted and is regarded as one of the most promising alternative fuels for achieving net-zero emissions in international shipping by 2050. However, its practical application requires advanced technologies, including safety measures to deal with its toxicity, solutions to its low flammability, and the suppression of emissions such as N₂O (nitrous oxide) and NOx (nitrogen oxides). Under the Green Innovation Fund Project “Development of Next-Generation Ships”by the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO), J-ENG verified the environmental performance, reliability, and safety of its engine through long-duration verification testing. J-ENG completed the world’s first full-scale, fully Japan-made ammonia-fueled engine, “7UEC50LSJA-HPSCR,” in August 2025. This engine has been installed on an Ammonia-Fueled Medium Gas Carrier (AFMGC) being built for NYK by Japan Marine United Corporation.

In this occasion, the new orders are marking an important step toward bringing the ammonia-fueled engine development into wider use on commercial vessels. J-ENG, as a licensor of fully Japan-made low speed marine engines, will contribute to the steady progress of the project by applying the technology and expertise gained from its first engine to these new units.

In addition, with support from the “Project to Promote the Construction of Zero-Emission Ships,” a joint initiative of the Ministry of the Environment and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism funded through GX (Green Transformation) Economy Transition Bonds, J-ENG has begun construction of a new factory to expand its production capacity for ammonia-fueled engines. Scheduled to start operation in fiscal year 2028, the new factory will strengthen J-ENG’s production capabilities to ensure a stable supply of next-generation fuel engines, for which demand is expected to grow.

As a first mover in next-generation fuel engines, J-ENG will leverage this order to drive business growth by the further adoption of ammonia-fueled engines, while contributing to the reduction of GHG (Greenhouse Gas) emissions, the achievement of net-zero emissions in international shipping by 2050, and the enhancement of the international competitiveness of maritime industry in Japan.
